The purpose of this research is to determine the prevalence of depression in patients
diagnosed with type I and II diabetes who attend the Fundación Integral de Diabetes
(Integral Diabetes Foundation) in the period August – December 2018 – January 2019. A
descriptive investigation was carried out in order to obtain information that describes the
signs and symptoms of depression in the selected population.
To reach this, 80 patients were interviewed, and a sociodemographic questionnaire was used
to obtain general information about the patients and characteristics about their coping skills,
in addition to Aaron Beck's depression inventory (BDI-II). The results show that the prevalence of signs and symptoms of depression in patients
diagnosed with type I and II diabetes is low. Among the factors that precipitate the
depression is the genetic predisposition and the lack of psychological support after the
diagnosis.
A high percentage shows coping skill such as how to react calmly to the diagnosis,
concentrate on facing the disease and develop a plan of action for it, look for something
positive in the diagnosis, and think about what they could do to manage the disease. Other
strategies they use are to express their emotions, accept the reality of their illness and learn
to live with it.
A program of evaluation and psychotherapeutic and psychoeducational approach should
offer the patient coping strategies and use psychoeducation techniques. The
psychotherapeutic intervention consists of providing tools that allow the control of
emotions, cognitions and behavior.
