Hydraulic engineering in the sugar industry was used from the 10th century in the Iberian Peninsula,
then taken to the Canary Islands at the end of the 15th century and from there to the New World, in the 16th century, installing the
first mill on the island of Española, where sugarcane (Saccharum
Officinarum). In 1504 in Concepción de la Vega, in the interior of the island, the first sugar mill was installed
with hydraulic system and in 1516 in the town of Azua de Compostela, in the south of the island, the first
trapiche moved by animals. One of the first sugar mills with a hydraulic system was installed by Diego
Caballero, between 1526 and 1530, called Ingenio San Cristóbal, which moved by means of a wheel
vertical hydraulic system fed by a system of water channels along a league (about 5
kilometres). This technological innovation contributed to the profitability of sugar production,
making it the most important and productive mill on the island. However, ingenuity has not been
studied and is in ruins. For this reason, the objective of this research is to analyze the system
San Cristóbal sugar mill, its spatial organization and contribution to the development of production
sugar factory in Hispaniola. For which, together with the bibliographic analysis, surveys were carried out
architectural, photographic, topographic studies with Trimble M3 brand robotic total station with
distance measurement DR Plus, and with Garmin eTrex 30x handheld GPS.
